House prices are rising faster and higher in some parts of the UK than in others, according to new Halifax figures. The firm compiled a list of the top 10 most expensive places to live in the UK, with Winchester replacing previous table-topper Oxford, which moved to second place. Truro, Bath, Chichester and Cambridge are among other cities on the list, while London is in eighth place, with average wages notably higher in the capital than elsewhere in the country. Overall the research shows that, while city house prices rose up to £287,440, a rise of 10.3%, wages in the same locations only rose by 2.1% to £35,677. As a result, the average home in a UK city now costs 8.1 times average earnings, according to Halifax.
