Landlords' appeals against rising council tax bills 'unwinnable'

marcfaubeau

Landlords are losing thousands in appeals against increases in their council tax bills that lawyers warn are doomed to fail. Buy-to-let investors are seeing their council tax bills quadruple as an increasing number of large rental properties are being reclassified as multiple smaller dwellings. On a six-bedroom property, this means six sets of council tax. Housing lawyers said appeals against these decisions at tribunal were “unwinnable”. Housing lawyers Alan Murdie said: “From my research, there have only been a couple of cases of successful challenges.” Mr Murdie estimated that 500 appeals to the tribunal against disaggregation had been dismissed since 2016. “Too many disaggregation decisions have now been made that the tribunal is afraid to overturn one,” he added.
