Sadiq Khan renews call for rent controls in London

marcfaubeau

Sadiq Khan has renewed calls for private rent controls in the capital. The London mayor has said that freezing rents for two years could help thousands of Londoners save up to £3,000 in rent. With London rents at a record high, Mr Khan is urging minsters to step in and regulate the private rented sector, or to give him powers to bring in caps himself. It comes as City Hall analysis, based on forecasts from Savills, reveals the pandemic has led to a quarter of 2.4m renters missing rent payments, with half a million Londoners now potentially facing eviction. However, landlords warned the plan left them unprotected from the same crisis and would force many to sell up - which would further shrink the supply of homes to rent and bring significantly higher rent increases down the line.
